Astigmatism: General Information About This Common Eye Condition

Astigmatism occurs when there is an imperfection in the curvature of the cornea or the lens of the eye. This difference in curvature impacts the angles at which light enters the eye, creating what is called a refractive error.

Astigmatism is very common, affecting approximately 3 million people in the United States. In many patients, astigmatism often occurs in tandem with another refractive error, such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness).

Some instances of astigmatism are so slight that they do not require treatment, while others can be more significant. Read on to learn more about the symptoms and treatment of astigmatism by the expert ophthalmology team at Milan Eye Center.

Blurred Vision And Other Astigmatism Symptoms

The most common symptom of astigmatism is blurred vision, both up close and far away. Some secondary symptoms of the blurred vision caused by astigmatism include:

  • Headaches
  • Eye strain
  • Distorted vision

While most instances of astigmatism occur naturally, patients may occasionally develop the condition due to an eye injury, surgery, or disease.

Treating Astigmatism

In extremely slight cases of the condition, astigmatism may not require any treatment. In mild to moderate cases, astigmatism can be corrected through the use of eye glasses or contact lenses. Both rigid and soft contact lenses are available for the treatment of astigmatism.

Some cases of astigmatism may be treated through the use of refractive surgery, such as LASIK, PRK, or Refractive Lens Exchange.

“Seeing Dr. Sajja was very easy and efficient. He was very thorough and professional. He was also very honest in what he felt needed to be done. He also had a very good bedside manner and was caring, nothing was painful at all. The surgery was a quick procedure and I was in excellent care. I was amazed that Dr. Sajja himself called me two days after surgery to check-up on me!”

“Dr. Milan Patel is an excellent, caring physician. From the initial exam through cataract surgery he was very patient with explaining the surgery and recovery process. I had both eyes replaced with new lenses and felt extremely comfortable through both procedures. I highly, highly recommend him!”
