Atlanta Ophthalmologists: Specializing in Cataracts

At Milan Eye Center, Dr. Milan Patel and Dr. Niraj Desai are leading physicians in the Atlanta area. While our doctors can expertly provide a wide variety of ophthalmic services such as treatment for glaucoma and eyelid surgery, they are renowned throughout the United States as well as the Atlanta ophthalmology community for performing cataract surgery.

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the lens within the eye. The lens is made mostly of water and protein; and as you age, the structures of those lens proteins are altered, leading to a gradual clouding of your vision.

Aside from the natural aging process, cataracts can form due to exposure to UV light, smoking, diabetes, or the use of certain medications such as steroids. Although cataract development is usually a gradual process of normal aging, cataracts can sometimes form rapidly. Because there is no pain associated with cataracts, many people are unaware that they have a problem. Other symptoms of cataracts include blurred vision, spots in the front of the eyes, or increased nearsightedness.

Cataract Surgery: Replacing the Intraocular Lens

Simply stated, cataract surgery involves replacing the cloudy intraocular lens. In a procedure that takes approximately ten minutes, a tiny incision is made, the natural clouded lens is removed, and a new lens implant is placed within the eye. Although cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures performed today, each of our physicians still take extreme care before, during, and after cataract surgery with each and every patient.
