A cataract is a clouding of the lens within the eye. The lens is made mostly of water and protein; and as you age, the structures of those lens proteins are altered, leading to a gradual clouding of your vision.
Aside from the natural aging process, cataracts can form due to exposure to UV light, smoking, diabetes, or the use of certain medications such as steroids. Although cataract development is usually a gradual process of normal aging, cataracts can sometimes form rapidly. Because there is no pain associated with cataracts, many people are unaware that they have a problem. Simply stated, cataract surgery involves replacing the cloudy intraocular lens.
