LASIK Eye Surgery Procedures

At Milan Eye Center in Atlanta, LASIK surgery offers a permanent improvement for your vision and eliminates your dependency on glasses or contacts. With recent advances in technology, more and more people are becoming prime candidates for laser eye surgery.

LASIK (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) has become one of the most common elective surgery procedures in the United States. LASIK is a painless surgical procedure which permanently changes the shape of the cornea. The light can then focus properly on the retina, and objects can be seen clearly. Patients are usually able to see dramatically better within 12 to 24 hours after the LASIK eye surgery procedure, returning to normal activities within a day or two without the need for glasses or contacts.

For the majority of patients who receive LASIK eye surgery, the cost is justified due to greatly improved vision.

LASIK Eye Surgery Procedures with Milan Eye Center

During the procedure, one of our expert physicians will create a precisely cut corneal flap. Patients are given anesthetic eye drops so there is no pain. The flap is then lifted and an excimer laser beam reshapes the cornea’s curvature to improve vision. The flap is then closed and covered with a protective contact lens. The eyelid surgery is safe, precise and highly successful.

The entire procedure takes only 5 – 8 minutes per eye, and patients are often ready to leave within an hour. The flap heals on its own within a few days with no need for stitches. As a result of LASIK surgery at Milan Eye Center in Atlanta, many of people have experienced the wonder of clear vision without glasses or contact lenses.

Are You A Candidate For Lasik?

While anyone interested in LASIK surgery at Milan Eye Center will need to schedule a consultation, these are the basic qualifications to be a candidate for LASIK Surgery:

  • 18 years or older
  • Vision has been stable for at least 6 months
  • Have a healthy cornea
  • Has refractive error(s) that fall within the treatable range
  • Do not have any eye diseases which might affect healing after surgery
  • Understands the risks and benefits associated with refractive surgery

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) also uses an excimer laser to correct vision, though the treatment is applied to the corneal surface. The long-term results are identical to LASIK, but patients are often less comfortable postoperatively and visual recovery is slower. Given the success of LASIK, PRK is now mostly used for patients who are prone to healing problems, have thinner corneas, and have other reasons that make them poor candidates for LASIK.

Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive Lens Exchange or Clear Lens Exchange (CLE) is a surgical procedure for people who are over 40 who may be experiencing new visual changes. Refractive Lens Exchange or CLE, can be used to correct presbyopia, nearsightedness or farsightedness. The surgery is very similar to cataract surgery in that your natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) implant, a multifocal IOL implant, or an accommodating IOL. One of our Atlanta opthalmology experts can explain which implant would be the correct choice for your particular situation and unique vision. Refractive Lens Exchange advantages include little down time with quick recovery, a predictable outcome, and an excellent quality of vision freeing you from using glasses or contacts.

How much does LASIK eye surgery cost?

LASIK surgery cost depends on the individual and exact type of procedure required.

If you hold insurance, it may or may not cover (or partially cover) the cost of LASIK eye surgery. It depends on your insurance provider, the level of cover you have and your personal situation.

In the majority of cases, insurance does not cover LASIK surgery cost; this is because it is often considered to be an elective or cosmetic procedure. However, there are some situations where you may be able to have part of the cost covered.

Those in certain professional fields that rely on their vision in their line of work may qualify, although these cases are not always accepted by insurance agencies. In some cases, patients who are genuinely unable to wear glasses or contact lenses for medical reasons may be able to present a case to their insurer.
